On November 20, 1945, the trial of 21 leading National Socialists, including Hitler's deputy Rudolf Hess, Reich Marshal Hermann Göring, and Nazi Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, began in Nuremberg. This marked the first time in history that representatives of a state had to answer for their crimes in court.

The film is based on the book "The Nazi and the Psychiatrist" by US author Jack El-Hai. In it, he describes the encounter of the young US military psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Malek) with Hermann Göring (Crowe). Kelley had the opportunity to question him for months in 1945 while preparations were underway for the trial of leading Nazis as war criminals. Göring, the former head of the Luftwaffe, was sentenced to death in 1946 but preempted his execution by committing suicide.
